It's been a busy month and we're only halfway through October...
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says it will reduce the supply of hydrocodone, oxycodone and many other opioids by 25% or more next year. The DEA says the cuts are needed because of declining demand, but hospice experts tell us they're worried the opioid supply will be reduced so much that even terminally ill patients may not be able to get the pain medication they need.
Activists in the pain community are planning a "Rally Against Pain" at the White House on October 22. The goal is to draw more attention to the plight of pain patients, including many who are losing access to opioid medication.
The DEA has changed its mind about kratom. Faced with public opposition and pressure from Congress, the agency has temporarily withdrawn plans to classify the herb as a Schedule I controlled substance. Activists say they still have plenty of work to do to make sure kratom is not made illegal.
